CEI-PEA, in partnership with International Art and Technology Cooperation Organization (ArTech), is currently planning the New York City implementation of Kids’ ISO 14000, an innovative environmental education program that helps children align society’s use of energy with the needs of our environment. The Kids’ ISO 14000 mission is accomplished by training children ages 10 and up to implement environmental management strategies in their homes and communities. The program utilizes workbooks, manuals, direct instruction and real-world applications of environmental management to provide children with a hands-on environmental management curriculum. These activities have led to over 10 percent reductions in greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions in the households and local communities in which the children who have completed the program are active.
Created in 2000 by internationally renowned scientist Takaya Kawabe, Kids’ ISO 14000 teaches children environmental science, math, physics and the scientific method as well as environmental management, economics and humanitarianism. By engaging children at an early age in shaping their environment, the program holds the promise for these children, acting in concert, to reverse global warming, reduce energy consumption and sustain a livable and peaceful environment. The program prepares children to become responsible users of energy sources in three ways:
The program is based on the principles of ISO 14001, an international standard for environmental management that could—if undertaken around the world—ensure the future of our environment. In teaching children an effective methodology for environmental management based on ISO 14001, the program is creating a platform for achieving this international standard within the lifetime of these children.
The program emphasizes the development of environmentally positive attitudes in children so that they will grow up with “conditioned reflexes” that will ensure environmental consciousness throughout their lives. They in turn will spread this consciousness to their school friends, their families, their communities, and later to their own children, thus establishing a broad framework of support for active environmental management. The global networking of the children’s efforts extends the reach of their concerted action around the world.
